3D Mammography

3D Mammography is a vital diagnostic tool that uses low-dose X-Rays to obtain detailed images of breast tissue. It is widely used to detect and diagnose breast abnormalities, including early signs of breast cancer, that may not be detectable through physical examination. By capturing high-resolution images, mammograms can identify tissue changes like calcifications and small lumps, enabling timely and proactive care.

3D Mammography

Available exclusively at our Kogarah & Wollongong Clinics, 3D mammography offers enhanced detail, improved diagnostic accuracy, and greater peace of mind for patients. This advanced technology generates three-dimensional breast images, allowing radiologists to identify abnormalities that may not be visible with traditional mammograms. By enabling earlier detection of breast cancer, 3D mammography significantly improves the chances of successful treatment and recovery.

Contrast Enhanced 3D Mammography

Offered solely at our Kogarah Clinic, contrast enhanced mammography is an advanced breast imaging technique that combines 3D tomosynthesis digital mammography with an intravenous contrast agent. This method highlights new or unusual blood flow patterns that often develop as cancers grow, making it easier to detect abnormalities earlier. By providing additional information beyond a conventional mammogram, contrast enhanced mammography enhances the ability to identify potential cancers with greater accuracy.

FAQs

Yes, an appointment is required. To book, contact Dr Glenn & Partners Medical Imaging by phone, in person, or by submitting your referral. When scheduling, please provide information about any previous mammograms or family history, as this may help determine Medicare rebate eligibility.

Preparation instructions will be provided at booking. On the day of your mammogram:

  • Wear a comfortable two-piece outfit.
  • Avoid wearing deodorant, talcum powder, or perfume, as these can interfere with image quality.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early to complete any paperwork.
You may be asked to fast for 2 hours and drink plenty of water before arriving for the procedure. You will also need a blood test before your appointment to check your renal function.

Please bring:

  • Your referral form.
  • Any prior imaging or reports related to breast health.
  • Method of payment including Medicare, Health or Pension Card.
  • For WorkCover claims, you will need the claim number, claim officer’s name and phone number, and any other relevant details.

A radiographer will guide you through the process, including preparation and positioning. You may be asked to change into a gown before the scan. During the mammogram, each breast will be placed on a flat plate and gently compressed with a paddle. This compression ensures clear imaging while minimising radiation exposure. Although some patients may experience brief discomfort, the procedure is generally quick and well-tolerated.

Once the scan is complete, a specialist radiologist will review the images and create a detailed report for your referring doctor.

Costs depend on your Medicare eligibility:

  • Diagnostic mammograms may be eligible for a Medicare rebate, depending on symptoms or history.
  • Screening mammograms often incur an out-of-pocket expense without a rebate.

Our staff will clarify any fees at the time of booking.
