At Dr Glenn & Partners Medical Imaging, biopsies and Fine Needle Aspirations (FNAs) are minimally invasive procedures designed to collect tissue or cell samples for thorough examination by a pathologist. A biopsy involves removing a small piece of tissue for microscopic evaluation, often performed under imaging guidance, such as ultrasound, to ensure precise targeting.

FNAs are a less invasive alternative that uses a fine, hollow needle to extract cells for analysis. These procedures are particularly effective for examining superficial masses or lymph nodes and are frequently used to assess thyroid nodules, breast abnormalities, and enlarged lymph nodes.

Yes, appointments are necessary for all biopsy and FNA procedures. Please contact us by phone, in person, or by submitting your referral to schedule the next available appointment. Typically, a diagnostic scan of the area in question is required before the procedure.

Specific preparation instructions will be provided during booking. It’s important to:

  • Wear a comfortable two-piece outfit.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork.
  • Bring any relevant previous imaging or reports.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home if needed.

Please ensure you have the following:

  • Your referral form.
  • Any prior imaging and reports relevant to the procedure.
  • Your Medicare or DVA card, if applicable.

When you arrive, a team member will guide you through the preparation process. The radiologist will use imaging guidance, such as ultrasound, to accurately target the area of interest. Depending on the procedure, either a tissue sample will be extracted via biopsy, or cells will be removed using a fine needle for analysis. These procedures are minimally invasive and quick, however, some biopsies such as liver and lung biopsies require a longer appointment. Once complete, the radiologist will prepare a report for your referring doctor.

Dr Glenn & Partners Medical Imaging bulk bills most Medicare-eligible services. However, some procedures may incur additional fees, which will be discussed with you during booking.

Reports are typically completed within 24–48 hours. For urgent cases, please notify our team so we can prioritise your results.
