Bone Mineral Density

Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scans, also referred to as DEXA scans, utilise dual-energy X-Ray absorptiometry to measure bone density. This test provides critical information about bone strength, fracture risk, and the potential for conditions like osteoporosis. BMD scans are particularly valuable for assessing bone fragility and guiding treatment decisions for bone health.

During the procedure:

  1. A trained radiographer will guide you through the process.
  2. You’ll lie on the scanning table as the machine assesses bone density in specific areas like the spine, hips, or forearm.
  3. The scan is painless and requires you to remain still for accurate measurements.

After the scan, a radiologist will interpret the results and prepare a detailed report for your referring doctor.
